Los Angeles severance review
Los Angeles Severance Review Lawyer
A severance agreement is a contract that buys something. Before you sign, it is worth knowing what you are selling and what it is worth.
This page covers severance agreements for Los Angeles employees. For the statewide rules see the statewide severance review, and for other Los Angeles claims see the Los Angeles hub.
What a Los Angeles Severance Package Usually Contains
Los Angeles severance lands in waves: studio and production consolidations, media and streaming restructures, agency cuts, and layoffs at the tech and healthcare employers spread across the county. The paperwork tends to look similar whatever the industry.
A release of all claims. A confidentiality clause. A non-disparagement clause. Often a reference to equity, unvested RSUs or a bonus you have already earned. Sometimes a reference to a group layoff, which brings its own disclosure duties.
The Deadline on Page One Is Rarely the Real Deadline
If you are 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an individual offer and 45 days in a group termination, plus 7 days to revoke after signing. California adds a floor of at least five business days to consult a lawyer on agreements that are not negotiated.
A group layoff also has to disclose the job titles and ages of everyone selected and not selected in the decisional unit. That disclosure is often where an age pattern becomes visible for the first time.
The Question Behind Every Severance Offer
The number matters less than what it is buying. If you have a claim worth more than the offer, signing the release ends it. If you have no claim, the offer is simply money and the job is to check the terms are clean.
That is the check worth doing first, and it is why a review starts with what happened rather than with the dollar figure.
Where a Los Angeles Claim Would Be Filed
Most Los Angeles employment cases are filed at Los Angeles Superior Court, Stanley Mosk Courthouse at 111 North Hill Street, with complex and class matters at the Spring Street Courthouse. The Labor Commissioner and the Civil Rights Department share the downtown building at 320 West 4th Street, the Labor Commissioner in Suite 450 and the CRD in Suite 1000, with a Van Nuys Labor Commissioner office at 6150 Van Nuys Boulevard, Room 206, for the Valley.

Los Angeles Severance FAQ
Can I Negotiate a Los Angeles Severance Offer?
Often, yes. Whether it is worth trying depends on what leverage the facts give you, which is what a review is for.
What Happens to Unvested RSUs When I Sign?
It depends on the plan documents rather than the severance agreement, and the two are frequently inconsistent. Both need reading together.
Does Signing Severance Stop Me Claiming Unemployment?
Generally not, though the timing of payments can affect when benefits start.
They gave me 24 hours. Is that allowed?
Not where the statutory consideration periods apply. Pressure to sign quickly is itself worth examining.
